Restoration brings an exciting energy to the Growth / Rebirth collection. Aneela, a skilled ceramicist, creates conceptual artworks that explore and evoke cultural memories and transitions. Restoration is a visual deconstruction of Aneela's childhood memories referencing the sacred cultural and historical role of cattle in India. The placid bovines that dot the landscape of Mumbai, a recurring theme in Aneela's work, are a juxtaposition to the fast pace of the city. These large animals offer a striking contrast with their passive personalities and indifference to the energetic environment surrounding them. This pause is reflected in Aneela's work through minimalist form and incredible texture, capturing our attention. In India cows symbolize life, generosity, and the divine Mother Earth pairing well with the resilience, enduring love, and prosperity of the succulent.
Aneela Dias-D’Sousa established herself as a ceramic artist after graduating from the University of Mumbai (B.F.A Ceramics) in India. Since immigrating to Canada, she continued her education at Sheridan College and has pursued residencies at Toronto’s Harbourfront Centre and the International Ceramics Centre in Kecskemet Hungary.
